Leukemia is caused by an excessive production of abnormal or immature blood (particularly leukocytes) cells. It begins with the problem in the DNA of cells. This translates into lack of normal blood cells and body ceases to function properly.
Production of bone marrow cells consists of several steps. Cells get transformed many intermediate types to form white, platelets and red blood cells.
Initially, the bone marrow consists of stem cells. Stem cells have three main categories, including haematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal and endothelial. These three types of hematopoietic stem cells are the root of normal cells. Hematopoietics can be classified in Lymphoid and myeloid cells. The cause of acute leukemia is often abnormal production of white blood cells. White blood cells or leukocytes have many types of sub. Few of these types are produced from the lymphoid cells and others are produced from myeloid. Platelets and red blood cells are grown in shape of myeloid cells. DNA produced cells either origin myeloid or lymphoid leukemia, is damaged. This leads to the production of abnormal white blood cells which displace any normal blood cell production. Cancer caused by origon myeloid is called Myelogenous Leukemia and cancer caused by lymphoid is known as Lymphocytic Leukemia. Leukemia, myeloid and lymphoid leukemia are the two types of leukemia.
Leukemia is further categorized in acute and chronic levels. Including this factor, leukemia has four types, including leukemia Acute Lymphocytic (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) (LMA) acute myelogenous leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
Acute means that this form of cancer has potential to become deadly in time of quick. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia requires immediate treatment otherwise recovery becomes impossible. More importantly, it is considered in childhood. Acute myeloid and chronic cancer does not require immediate treatment. Patients suffering from chronic leukemia is kept under observation and processed only when leukemia starts to damage tissues of the body. Chronic type seen especially in older populations. All types of leukemia treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and bone marrow transplantation biological treatment.
